The design of the newly opened Schermerhorn Symphony Center, home to the acclaimed
Nashville Symphony, was inspired by some of the world’s great concert halls built in Europe in
the late 19th century. A two-and-a-half-hour tour of this striking building will take you through
the public areas, as well as the mechanical areas to view the systems and discuss some of
the technical and commissioning challenges it presented. The Center’s convertible seating
system gives the hall versatility using a unique motorized chair-wagon system to lower rows
of seats into a storage space under the ballroom floor. Other innovative features include
natural interior light through 30 soundproof windows, and an automated system of moveable
banners and panels to adjust the acoustics for different performances.
