The AABC Commissioning Group (ACG) has recently been awarded the 2021 Power of A Silver Award for its “Enhancing Local Building Ordinances Campaign” by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).

The Power of A Awards were created to celebrate and promote the invaluable contributions that associations make to America and the world. Six associations were recognized with a 2021 Summit Award, 25 associations have been honored with Power of A Gold Awards, and 32 organizations received Power of A Silver Award recognition.

Ordinances for benchmarking commercial buildings, retro-commissioning, energy audits and other related aspects of documenting or reducing energy usage are proliferating rapidly throughout the U.S. Since the Paris Agreement on Climate Change was originally signed, many cities are doing their part to address building efficiency by implementing laws that go beyond the Paris Agreement’s goals.

The heart of the project, and our client-association, was 1. to promote certified independent commissioning services, so that the building owner receives work from proven professionals with no conflicts of interest. And 2. to promote certified energy management services by individuals who have incorporated a commissioning-based approach.

“The Ordinance Initiative was incredibly important for ACG’s growth, because more recognition in city ordinances means our certifications are more relevant, valuable, and worth pursuing,” said Troy Byers, CxA, TBE, ACG President.

The outcomes of the project were incredibly successful for the short time efforts have been in full force. We added 18 new recognitions to the CxA and EMP certifications collectively. That means that laws were edited 18 times by direct response to our advocacy. This includes legislation at the city, county, state, and federal level.
