Specifying the Commissioning Trifecta - Why and How to Specify Building Envelope Commissioning

Melissa Payne, BECxP, CxA+BE, CDT, TREMCO

Abstract:

This course will cover the critical role architects play as the owner of the commissioning specification. We will discuss building enclosure commissioning and why and how to specify commissioning which provides a successful trifecta scenario for the owner, design team, and construction team. A brief discussion of AIA’s Best Practices for BECx, ASTM E2813, ASTM E2947, ASHRAE 202, NIBS Guideline 3, ISO 17024, and ICC code requirements for exterior wall envelope and design will offer an understanding of what should be specified and why. We further discuss how these standards, guidelines, and codes can be implemented and specified in Division 1 and how to reference these in the individual specification sections related to the building enclosure.

BIM: What Cx Providers Need to Know

Darren Draper, PE, CxA, LEED AP, Epsten Group

Abstract:

Ensuring Operations & Maintenance personnel can access equipment and components is crucial to long-term operational success. As such, a primary charge of Commissioning Providers is to look out for maintenance limitations for MEP systems in new construction. Finding access and coordination issues as early as possible provides the greatest value to our clients. Building Information Modeling (BIM), having become commonplace on most mid- and large-scale projects, provides an excellent opportunity for CxA’s to integrate into that process and provide feedback on issues of accessibility and maintainability.

DNA Based Commissioning Case Study of a Large Southern School District

Raj Setty, PE, CxA, Setty
Jeffrey Michael, Setty

Abstract:

The seminar will outline the parameters for identifying, assessing, and implementing new air distribution design strategies in schools. In a case study with a large southern school district, a radical new air distribution functional performance test was undertaken for creating healthier spaces in the classroom environs. Comprehensive air testing utilized DNA tracers to detect how air is distributed, supplied and returned to main air handlers, identification of potential hot spots, verify ventilation and dilution and filtration effectiveness. Implementing controls automation with unique sequence of operations, our team captured ventilation effectiveness, cleaning procedures, capacity limits, and energy efficiency within school spaces. By analyzing the functional performance test results, the true real world effectiveness of the mitigation strategies was quantified

Interpreting Electrical Commissioning Requirements of Current Guidelines IECC, LEEDv4 and FGI

Jesse Felter, Smith Seckman Reid, Inc.

Abstract:

Electrical commissioning requirements are often determined by guidelines and standards. How those guidelines and standards may be interpreted differently by both the Client and commissioning provider (CxP). This course is intended to provide possible interpretation for two of the more common references used in defining electrical commissioning scope and requirements.
